Material sources


Popularly speaking, this kind of fabric is similar to the polyethylene plastic used in kitchen. This kind of material can allow infrared radiation to pass through, but it is impervious and transparent, and can not be used to make clothes at all. However, Stanford University researchers have integrated nanotechnology, photonics technology and chemical technology to make up for the shortcomings of this polyethylene material.


Raw material transformation


They found a polyethylene material commonly used in batteries, which has a special nanostructure and is opaque under visible light, but cannot block infrared radiation. Then, the researchers used a harmless chemical to make it permeable, allowing water vapor molecules to pass through the nanopore of the material. In this way, the improved new material has three basic conditions as clothing fabrics: Opacity under visible light, permeability and air permeability, allowing thermal radiation to pass through.


In order to make this light and thin material more like clothing fabrics, researchers designed a three-layer fabric structure with a certain strength and thickness: two-layer polyethylene, separated by cotton webs in the middle.


Heat dissipation mechanism


Researchers point out that all objects, including the human body, radiate heat in the form of infrared radiation. Clothes restrict the body's heat emission and make the skin feel warmer.


This new fabric uses a completely different cooling mechanism: by reducing the infrared radiation barrier to promote body heat dissipation, not using external energy, but by changing the infrared radiation penetration of materials to achieve the goal.


Compared with cotton cloth of the same thickness, the new fabric has better heat dissipation performance: wearing clothes made of new fabrics will have a body temperature of two degrees Celsius lower than wearing cotton clothes.


Little knowledge


Polyethylene is odorless, non-toxic, waxy-like, with excellent low temperature resistance (the lowest operating temperature can reach - 100-70 degree C), good chemical stability, and resistance to most acid-base corrosion (not resistant to oxidizing acid). It is insoluble in general solvents at room temperature and has low water absorption and excellent electrical insulation.


Researchers at Stanford University in the United States have developed a new type of fabric with better heat dissipation than all natural or synthetic fabrics currently available. They wrote in the Journal Science that wearing clothes made of such fabrics in summer can feel cool and comfortable even in the absence of air conditioning.
